Accidents happen. And one of the worst accidents experienced in the world of fashion is a spill - wine, coffee, tomato sauce, you name it. We’ve all been there.

But we’re here to remind you that an accident doesn’t always need to be fatal. Just about every stain can be treated, especially when caught early. And we’re not just talking about a trip to the dry cleaner - you can conquer most stains with a few household ingredients, if you know the right recipes. These are our favorites:

The classic seltzer trick

  • Club soda

  • Salt

Mix them together, blot your stain with the mixture using a paper towel. This recipe only works on fresh stains, but it works well.

The most popular recipe out there

  • Dish soap

  • Hydrogen peroxide

  • Baking soda

Mix one part dish soap and two parts hydrogen peroxide, and add a bit of baking soda. Spray or pour the mixture directly on a stain, then launder as usual.

A natural alternative to bleach

  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice

  • 3 1/4 cups water

Swish together the hydrogen peroxide and lemon juice in a bowl, then add to a jug with the water. Use this as you would normally use bleach.

  • 1/4 cup vegetable glycerin

  • 1/4 cup water that has been boiled and cooled

  • 1/4 cup castile soap

  • 1 tablespoon hydrogen peroxide

  • 40 drops of lemon essential oil

Combine all the ingredients in a dark spray bottle. Spray the mixture on a stain, let it rest for five minutes then scrub the stain until it lifts.
